D'Angeline Nobility - The Great Houses - House Courcel

Alais de la Courcel

(Reference key found here.)

**Spoilers for Avatar**
Alais de la Courcel is Ysandre and Drustan's younger daughter. She is born in the winter after Sidonie's first birthday, making her almost two years younger than her older sister (KM 125; trust my math skills). Alais looks like her father, almost purely Cruithne, save that she has inherited her mother's purple L'Envers eyes.

**Spoilers for Scion, Justice, Mercy**
As the younger daughter, as well as the less-D'Angeline-looking one, Alais often feels out of place at court. She loves Imriel as a brother and thoroughly enjoys Eamonn mac Grainne's company, because both of them treat her as her own person rather than a visible reminder of the "pollution" of Elua's bloodline.
Alais dreams true dreams as well, an inheritance from Drustan, because the daughters of Necthana's line have the gift. A dream of a man with two faces comes true when Imriel is in Lucca; a dream of Imriel in a snowstorm comes true in Vralia; and a nightmare about a bear may or may not have been a true dream about Berlik. Alais also dreams that Imriel will be her real brother, which comes true when he weds Sidonie at the end of Mercy.
At first, Alais is betrothed to Drustan's nephew and heir (her first cousin), Talorcan. The wedding is delayed several times for various reasons: Alais wanted more training in understanding her dreams; she wanted to rule Alba at Talorcan's side; she wanted her children to inherit. After Alais was called back to Terre d'Ange to act as regent during Mercy, she decided she wanted no part of ruling a country and announced her desire to become an ollamh, an Alban bard/judge/historian, a rank which is the equivalent of a Cruarch. Additionally, Drustan's older sister, Breidaia, agrees to adopt Alais as her daughter, which means that her children will be eligible as Talorcan's heirs.

**not actually so much spoilers as background information presented in Naamah's Kiss as history**
Alais marries Conor mac Grainne, son of the Lady Grainne of the Dalriada and Ferghus, a harpist of the Maghuin Dhonn. She becomes known as Alais the Wise in Alba. Alais and Conor have several children, one of whom inherits as Cruarch. The others melt back into the Maghuin Dhonn to live in the wild places of Alba. The protagonist of Naamah's Kiss, Moirin, is the daughter of Fainche and is the great-great-granddaughter of Alais and Conor. (Alais gives birth to Brianna who gives birth to Eithne who gives birth to Fainche who gives birth to Moirin.) A trust fund exists for Alais's descendants; Moirin is the first one to make a claim on it.
