The name Valerian comes from the Latin word valere, meaning "to be
strong or healthy." The House canon is algolagnia and submission.
Algolagnia is a sexual tendency which is defined by deriving sexual
pleasure and stimulation from physical pain. It is distinct from BDSM
in that it is a physical reaction based on motor functions, and not a
believed psychological reaction such as masochism.
Valerian selects early on which of its fosterlings will remain in the
House, and which will be sold to other Houses. Children at the age of
six are given spiced candies, and an adept explains that the pleasure
from the candy is derived from the touch of pain that the spice
provokes. The children who understand this are kept, while the others
have their marques sold. From then on no fosterling or apprentice of
Valerian is allowed to experience pleasure without pain, or pain
without pleasure.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of
ancient Greece and Rome. According to folk belief, this medicine could
turn everything painful into good. It was therefore called "wenderot"
or similar in Germanic language groups, meaning the root that could
turn things bad to good.
Here at TDA's Valerian House, the adepts range from witty and wild to
mild and meek, with but one shared link, we desire the spice of pain
along with our pleasure.
Valerian House has the longest history on TerreD'Ange.net, housing
many senior members as well as housing several of the site's most
active members. Bafana Bafana is a former Dowayne of Valerian House,
then became the Priest of Nammah, and is now our Royal Treasurer. Our
dear Priestess of Naamah, Ambyre, also once called Valerian House home
after her marque was purchased from Mandrake House. Our current
Dowayne, Locke, was even the Sun Prince at the site's first ever
Mid-Winter Masque.
Valerian houses many witty, creative, and charming people including

well as the Ladies Myriam, Willow, Amorette and Adeyna.
