Dahlia House, in the words of its
members:
Dahlia’s motto is “upright and unbending”, and its Adepts are
generally described as haughty, regal, and stuck-up. Dahlias seem very
proud and believe that Naamah “bestowed herself like a queen”.
However, we don’t see much of Dahlia at close range in the books. The
little we see or hear is outsiders’ views on the House, rumors or
stories about how the House supposedly is. What Dahlia’s really like
is something we’ve had to define for ourselves. This is our personal
interpretation of the Dahlia House on TDA.
The image of a Dahlia Adept as a queen is fitting. We often try to
behave as befits a queen. Some might find us cold and insensitive, but
that’s just because we’re usually in control of our emotions and don’t
display them to the world. Others might describe us as aloof and
distant, and it’s true we don’t let just anyone close to us.
What we give to patrons is the pride of having won the most
hard-to-get prize on Mont Nuit. We don't give ourselves over to just
anyone, so we make our patrons feel worthy of receiving our coveted
attention. Imagine the way the poorest stable-boy might feel, were he
invited to become the consort of the Queen Herself.
Like a queen, Dahlias are strong. We’re stubborn and proud of our
choices and opinions. Once we’ve made up our mind about something, we
don’t bend from the chosen path easily. We generally strive to be
dignified and in control, and it takes a lot to shake us off balance.
Of course, we take the occasional stumble, but we learn from it and
move on, determined not to make the same mistake again. Dahlias are
proud of who we are. There is a fundamental sense of self-worth in
Dahlia, a pride of being yourself and doing what you think is right
for you, no matter what. Our firm sense of identity, of who we are and
how we relate to the world, makes it almost impossible to break our
spirits.
There is a clear distinction between the public Dahlia and the private
one. We don’t deceive anyone about who we are or what we feel, but we
don’t share everything with everyone either. In public, we’re queens,
dignified and in control. Queens can’t allow themselves to seem weak,
insecure, or afraid. In private, however, we recognize that we’re also
human, that we aren’t perfect and never will be. Very few people are
ever allowed to see that private side of us - not because we’re
anti-social, but because it takes time to earn our trust so
completely.
